built on stilts. Garden house in the centre of a pond in the Elysian Fields at
Stowe, Buckinghamshire. It was designed by the Italian
painter Francesco Sleter, who combined figures, foliage and
calligraphy into a complex chinoiserie style,
with this magnificent deep stone colour as a backdrop.
Colour research has shown that this precious structure
was painted over at least twice. Once in the early 19th century and the second time in 1937. After being exhibited for some time in the neighbouring Wotton estate and in Ireland, the Chinese House was returned to the Stowe estate to be fully and faithfully restored in 1996.
